Beethoven’s "Waldstein" Sonata
Saturday, May 10, 8pm, NEC’s Jordan Hall
Beethoven’s Sonata No. 21 in C Major, the “Waldstein,” a pinnacle of achievement by one of history’s greatest composers, was inspired by Count Ferdinand von Waldstein, who guided and encouraged a young Beethoven at a crossroads in his life. It was Waldstein who sent Beethoven off to study with Haydn with the immortal phrase, “May you receive the spirit of Mozart through the hands of Haydn.” Join Rob Kapilow and pianist Jeremy Denk as they explore the difference-making details hidden in one of Beethoven’s masterworks.
"You could practically see the light bulbs going on above people’s heads ... The audience could decipher the music in a new, deeper way. It was the total opposite of passive listening."
