CELEBRITY SERIES OF BOSTON PRESENTS
THE MARIA SCHNEIDER ORCHESTRA
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17 AT THE BERKLEE PERFORMANCE CENTER

Berklee College of Music Hosts Week-long Residency By Schneider

(BOSTON)—Celebrity Series of Boston, Martha H. Jones, President and Executive Director, presents the Maria Schneider Orchestra on Saturday, November 17 at 8:00 p.m. at the Berklee Performance Center, 136 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston. The performance marks the Boston debut of Schneider and her New York-based big band, and is presented in association with Berklee College of Music.

Berklee College of Music hosts a residency by Ms. Schneider from November 13-16. The residency includes master classes, clinics—one for composers and arrangers, the other examining the music business in general, and a free public performance by the Berklee College Jazz Orchestra with Ms. Schneider on Friday,
November 16 at 7:30 p.m. in David Friend Recital Hall, 921 Boylston Street, Boston. Tickets to the concert will be available at the door and are extremely limited.

Maria Schneider is one of today’s most prolific and visionary contemporary jazz composers and bandleaders. She was born in Windom, Minnesota and attended the University of Minnesota, University of Miami, and Eastman School of Music. In 1985, she relocated to New York City and began studying composition with Bob Brookmeyer, and working as an assistant to Gil Evans whose music she has, in recent years, been invited to conduct. Ms. Schneider established the Maria Schneider Orchestra in 1993, and the ensemble performed regularly at Visiones in Greenwich Village for five years. Subsequently the Maria Schneider Orchestra received invitations to perform at jazz festivals and in concert halls in Europe and South America. This established Ms. Schneider as a venerable composer and bandleader and earned her several commissions and invitations for guest conducting.

The Maria Schneider Orchestra’s first three recordings—Evanescence, Coming About, and Allégresse—all earned Grammy nominations. Concert in the Garden, released in 2005, won a Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. Released only on Ms. Schneider’s web site, Concert in the Garden was the first recording with Internet-only sales to win a Grammy Award. Ms. Schneider’s most recent recording, Sky Blue, was released in July 2007 on Mariaschneider.com to critical acclaim.

Mariaschneider.com is part of ArtistShare—a primarily artist and fan-funded venture conceived and developed in 2000 by musician and computer consultant Brian Carnelio. ArtistShare enables fans to experience a recording project from its conception through to its release, and to contribute to its success financially and creatively by providing access to the creative process.
