What is a Gewandhaus?

The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra was founded 250 years ago in March of 1743 by sixteen Leipzig merchants under the name "Grand Concert." After three decades in the Three Swans Inn in Leipzig's Brühl neighborhood, increasing audience interest made it necessary to find a new home. In 1781 the orchestra moved into a 500-seat theater in the assembly hall of the cloth traders, the Gewandhaus (Garment House). The orchestra and its performance space took on the name of this original hall and retain it to this day despite several changes to their accommodations in the following centuries.

One hundred year after moving into the Gewandhaus, the orchestra's audience had again outgrown their hall and a second Gewandhaus in classical style was dedicated in December of 1884. Although intended to be the orchestra's permanent home, the new Gewandhaus was badly damaged during a bombing raid in February of 1944, and despite efforts at rehabilitation, the ruins were demolished in 1968. For nearly forty years, concerts were given in temporary quarters in the Congress Hall near the Leipzig Zoo. Thanks to the untiring efforts of the then Gewandhaus Music Director, Kurt Masur, the orchestra was finally able to move into a modern performance venue ideally suited to its musical, acoustical and technical requirements - the third Gewandhaus on Augustusplatz, which opened in October of 1981. The main performance space in this third Gewandhaus is named after Felix Mendelssohn, who along with Arthur Nikisch, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Franz Konwitschny and Kurt Masur numbered among the most distinguished Gewandhaus Music Directors.

In addition to the orchestra, The Gewandhaus also supports several chamber music ensembles. The Gewandhaus string quartet is the oldest continuously existing string quartet in the world and was founded in 1808. The Gewandhaus Wind Quintet, founded in 1896, was one of the first ensembles of its kind, if not the very first.

Over 600 events take place every year at the Gewandhaus. Of these, the 70 annual Grand Concerts by the Gewandhaus Orchestra form the focal point, along with concerts by the Gewandhaus Chorus and Children's Choir, numerous chamber music ensembles, the Gewandhaus Quartet, Gewandhaus Wind Quintet, and popular Saturday afternoon organ recitals. For over 200 years, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra has also served as the house orchestra of the Leipzig Opera, in addition to its weekly performances of cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach at St. Thomas's Church and 35 guest appearances each season throughout the world as well as numerous recordings.

Purchase tickets for the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in Symphony Hall on February 25.

From Monterey to Boston

The Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour brings four illustrious jazz musicians and festival veterans to the Berklee Performance Center on February 11: violinist Regina Carter, vocalist Kurt Elling, guitarist Russell Malone, and pianist Kenny Barron. They most recently performed together as The Monterey Jazz Festival All Stars at the 2009 festival.

The Monterey Jazz Festival was founded in 1958 by San Francisco disc jockey Jimmy Lyons and jazz critic Ralph J. Gleason, who were inspired by the success of the first Newport Jazz Festival in 1954. Headliner Dave Brubeck was also instrumental to the launch of the festival and gave a special performance for the Monterey City Council in order to convince them to grant approval for the event. The festival has since been held annually the third weekend of September on the 20-acre Monterey Fairgrounds.

Other inaugural performers included Gerry Mulligan, Max Roach, Billie Holiday (just nine months before her death), and an iconic joint performance by rivals Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie. Over the years, the Monterey Jazz Festival has expanded to include blues, gospel and world music. Many artists have come to the festival year after year. Dave Brubeck is perhaps the most frequent guest and has appeared 14 time over the festival's 50 years. The Monterey Jazz Festival also sponsors year-round educational programs in the Monterey area and awards annual scholarships to Berklee College of Music.

Two of this season's other artists are also veterans of the Monterey Jazz Festival. Bobby McFerrin performed there in 1983, 1986, 1995, and 2004. Dee Dee Bridgewater appeared in 1973, 2001, and 2009.
