The Boston Debut of Mark Morris'
Mozart Dances

The Mark Morris Dance Group's Mozart Dances will be accompanied live by the Orchestra of Emmanuel Music, conducted by Jane Glover, and with piano soloists Russell Sherman and Minsoo Sohn. The production illuminates Mozart's Piano Concerto, No. 11; Sonata in D Major for 2 Pianos; and Piano Concerto, No. 27. Mozart Dances was created for the 2006 Mostly Mozart Festival in New York but has never been performed in Boston.

Boston's Emmanuel Music was founded in 1970 by Craig Smith to perform the complete cycle of over 200 sacred cantatas of J.S. Bach in the liturgical setting for which they were intended, an endeavor twice completed and a tradition which continues today. The only other venue to perform the complete Bach cantata cycle on an annual basis is the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, where Bach worked as church organist and music director.

For Mozart Dances, Jane Glover will lead the Orchestra of Emmanuel Music. Known chiefly as a Mozart specialist, she has conducted all the Mozart operas regularly, all over the world, since her initial performances of them in Glyndebourne in the 1980's. Her acclaimed book, Mozart's Women, looks at Mozart's life through the eyes of the women around him, including his wife, Costanze, his mother, sister, and cousins, as well as the opera singers he worked with and the roles he created for them.

Pianist Russell Sherman has toured the world and performed with numerous orchestras and chamber artists. He is also the first American to record both Beethoven's complete piano sonatas and the five piano concertos. In addition to sharing his artistry, Sherman shares his experiences in his book Piano Pieces, a collection of witty and inspiring essays on piano playing and contemporary music culture. His latest release on GM, The Beethoven Piano Concertos: Live at Monadnock, features the all-star Monadnock Festival Orchestra. Sherman is currently on the faculty at New England Conservatory.

Minsoo Sohn was born in Korea and began piano at age three and went on to study with Russell Sherman and Wha Kyung Byun at the New England Conservatory. He has appeared with the BSO, the Holland Symfonia, Israel Philharmonic, National Orchestra of Belgium, Real Filharmonia de Galicia (Spain), and Orchestra "Haydn" of Bolzano and Trento (Italy).

Ax the Applause?

Over the past year, Emanuel Ax has mused on the rituals and regulations of applause at concerts. Ax observes that many 1st movements build passion and end with a flourish precisely to elicit audience response, which was freely given in the 18th & 19th century concert halls, and laments stifling of spontaneous appreciation. "I really hope we can go back to the feeling that applause should be an emotional response to the music, rather than a regulated social duty."
