Dee Dee Bridgewater: From The Wiz to Lady Day
Dee Dee Bridgewater has had a long and distinguished career as a stage performer and singer. She first portrayed Billie Holiday in the original 1986 Paris production of Stephen Stahl's play Lady Day. In 1987 she was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in the 1987 London production of the play. Ms. Bridgewater reprised her role for the New York premiere of Lady Day in 2009 and has continued to win accolades for her performance.
"Not merely parroting that languid Holiday sound but interpreting her songs in her own way, Miss Bridgewater gives credible and moving versions of such Holiday classical as 'Lady Sings the Blues', 'Strange Fruit,' 'Loverman' and 'I can't get started'- Daily Telegraph, London
Miss Bridgewater's most recent album is Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959): To Billie with Love from Dee Dee, which pays tribute to the jazz legend with new arrangements of 12 of her signature songs. Bridgewater is joined on the album by pianist Edsel Gomez, reeds player James Carter, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Lewis Nash.
Dee Dee Bridgewater began her stage career in 1974 with a Tony Award-winning performance as Glinda the Good Witch in The Wiz. She went on to perform in other musicals such as Sophisticated Ladies, Cosmopolitan Greetings, and Cabaret. 1974 also marked the release of Afro Blue, her first recording under her own name. Since that fateful year, Ms. Bridgewater has released over a dozen albums, including J'ai deux amours, a celebration of French song, Dear Ella, a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, and Victim of Love with Ray Charles. In 2007, she released Red Earth, an exploration of the music of Mali.
She currently hosts NPR's JazzSet, a weekly program featuring performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, the Monterey Festival in California, and Jazz Standard in New York.
