The World
of the
Berliner
Philharmoniker

Throughout its history, the Berliner Philharmoniker has been led by some of Europe’s most famous conductors, including Wilhelm Furtwängler, Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abaddo, and now Sir Simon Rattle. Celebrity Series has presented the orchestra under all of these illustrious maestros since 1955.

The Berliner Philharmoniker has been in existence for over 125 years. Although it is not the oldest orchestra in Europe, it is one of the most highly acclaimed and demonstrates an intense dedication to concert music of all kinds. In addition to bringing together 128 of the world’s best instrumentalists, the Philharmonic supports 28 chamber ensembles including 3 string quartets and the Berlin Philharmonc Wind Quintet, which performs at NEC’s Jordan Hall on Feb 5. The orchestra also maintains a pianist in residence. Currently, Lang Lang, who performed with us last March, holds this position. Previous piano residencies were held by Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Mitsuko Uchida, and András Schiff.

The orchestra is housed in one of the most acoustically refined and exciting halls in the world. Designed by Hans Scharoun, the Philharmonie was built in 1963 and created some debate with its modernistic aesthetic and non-traditional seating arrangement. Housed in an angular structure with gold accents, the concert hall itself is designed in a pentagonal shape with the audience seated in tiers around the orchestra. You can take a virtual tour of the complex on the Berlin Philharmonic website. Directly connected to the Philharmonie is the Berlin Music Instrument Museum, which possesses a collection of 500 instruments, including some rare Baroque and Renaissance pieces as well as a few instruments owned by well-known composers and performers.

In celebration of the orchestra's US tour, Deutsche Bank will present a free webcast of the Berliner Philharmoniker and Sir Simon Rattle performing Brahms's Third and Fourth symphonies on Monday, November 9 at 8.00 p.m. EST on its website, www.db.com.

ACT2 Extends Ailey Tradition

The fall session of ACT2, the Celebrity Series' after-school dance program, is now underway at Origination Cultural Arts Center in Roxbury. This year 40 youngsters from Boston middle schools - all alumni of AileyCamp Boston, our award-winning summer dance program - will work with teachers and mentors in a safe, supportive, arts rich environment in which they learn more about themselves and each other as they learn about dance. AileyCamp Boston and ACT2 are modeled on programs created by legendary dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey, who knew that dance - with its compelling marriage of self-expression, discipline, team work, passion and joy - has the power to change lives. To learn more about ACT2, AileyCamp, or any of the Celebrity Series' Arts, Community and Education Programs serving youngsters and families throughout greater Boston, please visit our website or call 617-598-3231 for more information.
