Ingrid Fliter’s Love of Chopin

Chopin's music has both personal and professional significance for Argentine pianist Ingrid Fliter. Her parents met over Chopin's music, and his waltzes, nocturnes, and mazurkas were heard regularly, either played by her father or on recordings by Rubinstein, during Ingrid's childhood. Fliter will perform a selection of Chopin's waltzes on her November 1 recital.

Of the composer, Fliter reflects: "Chopin is not afraid of extremes and one can be dragged, in a very short amount of time, from the feeling of levitating in the eternity of heaven to the deepest sorrow of existence... But most of all Chopin speaks directly to the heart of people. When I play Chopin I feel a warm wave of recognition among the audience towards his music. For this reason I do believe he transcends matters of time or fashion and will always be loved by people from all over the world."

Fliter has embraced new channels for distribution of her music, including iTunes and YouTube. "I'm a very big fan of the Internet. YouTube is a great discovery, and the possibilities to get music, even classical music, are huge. It makes it easier to get into people houses as part of their everyday life."

You can see Ingrid play Chopin's Nocturne in D-flat Major, Op. 27, No. 2 here.

"For me the most natural way of facing a piece of music is to feel it as telling a story. And for this I need to try to start feeling and thinking as the composer did. It doesn't mean that I know for sure what the composer wanted to express; I can only wish that educational background and a certain intuition will lead me to respect characteristics of style and expression and to be as credible as possible."

Free community event

The Laramie Project portrayed one town in America at the end of the millennium. But in doing so, it managed to capture something profoundly American, something about social injustices, about beliefs, about idiosyncrasies.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Matthew Shepard's murder, Tectonic Theater Project returned to Laramie for a second round of interviews, including Matthew Shepard's mother Judy Shepard and murderer Aaron McKinney, as well as follow-up conversations with many of the individuals from the original piece. These interviews formed the basis for the epilogue.

The original play, The Laramie Project, was written a month after Matthew Shepard's 1998 murder. The piece has been seen by more than 50 million people around the country and made into an HBO film. The Tectonic Theater Project wanted to record how such a hate crime had affected a small town in the hope of shedding light on the ideas and beliefs that were shaping the nation. In returning a decade later, the writers sought to investigate the kinds of changes that occur after a pivotal event

The Celebrity Series and Emerson College presentation is part of a series of performances at 100 other theaters across the country on October 12, 2009. As part of the national community aspect of the event, a pre and post show component will be broadcast live from Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall to all the participating theaters. The pre show portion will include an introduction by the writers, as well as appearances from special guests to be announced. The post-show will consist of a Q&A in which questions will be taken from audience members in theaters around the country.

In tandem with the premiere, an online interactive community will be launched where participants can blog, upload video and photos and share their stories about the play, experiences in preparing and presenting the Epilogue in their communities. The members of Tectonic Theater Project will be active participants in the online community, offering participants feedback and encouragement.

Free tickets are still available. Click here for reservation information.
