Four Decades of Achievement
Frederica von Stade made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1970. This season she caps her 40-year career with a Farewell Recital with her friend and special guest Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.
Frederica Von Stade’s connection with Dame Kiri extends back to the very beginning of their careers, when they appeared together in the 1973 Glyndenbourne festival production of Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, which is available on Arthaus Musik. They recorded the opera a second time with George Solti and the London Philharmonic Orchestra for Decca in 1984. Frederica and Dame Kiri reprised their roles as Cherubino and the Countess Almaviva at the Met in 1991. Frederica and Dame Kiri have also performed together in Cosi fan tutte and recorded it with the Strasbourg Philharmonic and the Rhine Opera Chorus for Erato.

Robert Schumann's Literary Mind
Robert Schumann (1810-1856) was not only a prolific composer, but a trailblazing music critic as well. Throughout his life, he published articles, that while often fanciful, contributed significantly to the rise of the Romantic music aesthetic.
"Let us enter the fray, not with wild cries as our old German forefathers did, but rather like the Spartans, with merry flutes." (from Schumann's 1835 article Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique)
You can hear Schumann's music at these performances:
Ingrid Fliter, November 1
Emanuel Ax, January 8
Richard Goode and Jonathan Biss, February 7
NEC Philharmonia, April 7
