Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra
Riccardo Chailly, conductor
Louis Lortie, piano soloist Thursday, February 25, 8pm, Symphony Hall
The first hint an audience receives that they are listening to the Leipzig Gewandhaus is the uniquely dark string timbre; their glowing, burnished calling card. It takes an orchestra founded in Bach’s time to produce such a rich, lustrous echo of the Old World. There are few sounds left today to match it. The brilliant conductor Riccardo Chailly leads this great orchestra with the masterful Brazilian pianist Nelson Freire in his Celebrity Series debut.
Program:
Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor” Symphony No. 7
Encores:
Beethoven Sonata No. 26 in E-flat Major, Op, 81a, final movement
Overture to Prometheus, Op. 43
