Grammy®-nominated artists Alfredo Rodríguez and Pedrito Martinez each bring a different approach to their duo performances. A protégé of Quincy Jones, Alfredo was schooled in the rigorous classical conservatories of Havana, while Pedrito’s musical training came directly from the streets of the Cayo Hueso neighborhood of Old Havana in which he was raised. Together, these two master musicians take listeners on a unique and exciting journey.

Pedro Pablo “Pedrito” Martinez was born in Havana, Cuba, Sept 12, 1973. Having settled in New York City in the fall of 1998, by 2000, he had been awarded the Thelonius Monk Award for Afro-Latin Hand Percussion and was featured in the documentary film, Calle 54. Martinez has recorded or performed with Wynton Marsalis, Paul Simon, Paquito D’Rivera, Bruce Springsteen, and Sting and has contributed, as a percussionist and vocalist, to over 50 albums. Martinez was also a founding member of the highly successful, Afro-Cuban/Afro-Beat band, Yerba Buena, with which he recorded two albums and toured the world.

Joining the Duo in this double bill is Arturo O’Farrill, son of one of Cuba’s most famous bandleaders, Chico O’Farrill. Celebrity Series audiences will recall his spectacular turn leading his Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble with Malpaso Dance Company in 2016 and his Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra in 2015. Now appearing for the first time with his quintet, featuring his sons Adam on trumpet and Zack on drums, this two-time Grammy Award-winner keeps the family flame burning bright while breaking new ground in contemporary Latin Jazz.

O’Farrill is a pianist, composer, educator, and founder and Artistic Director of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, who was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. His debut album with the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, Una Noche Inolvidable, earned a first GRAMMY Award nomination in 2006. His next album Song for Chico, earned a GRAMMY Award for Best Latin Jazz Album in 2009. The 2015 release of The Offense of the Drum was yet another Grammy Award winner. Arturo was, in addition, the winner of the Latin Jazz USA Outstanding Achievement Award, and a Cubadisco Award for The Offense of the Drum in 2015. His acclaimed album Cuba: The Conversation Continues (on the Motéma label) took the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album. His "Three Revolutions" from the album Familia - Tribute to Chico and Bebo was the 2018 Grammy Award winner Best Instrumental Composition.

Program to be announced from the stage.
