This performance marks the Celebrity Series debut for both Sergio Mendes and Bebel Gilberto.

Bossa Nova was born on July 10, 1958, at the old Odeon recording studios in Rio de Janeiro. That’s the date that João Gilberto recorded “Chega de Saudade” – Bossa Nova’s very first song and the beginning of a musical and worldwide cultural phenomenon. Celebrate 60 years of Bossa Nova with multi-Grammy-winning producer, composer, keyboardist and vocalist, Sérgio Mendes, one of the most internationally successful Brazilian artists of all time. Joining Mendes is Bebel Gilberto, the thrilling Bossa Nova vocalist, and daughter of João Gilberto, who is steeped in Bossa Nova music, having made her Carnegie Hall debut at age nine on a Bossa Nova program with her mother, the singer Miúcha, and saxophonist Stan Getz.

Producer, composer, keyboardist and vocalist, Sergio Mendes’ influence on the music industry has spanned five decades and continues to evolve through new collaborations and mediums.

One of the most internationally successful Brazilian artists of all time, Mendes has recorded more than 35 albums, many of which went gold or platinum, and he’s a three-time Grammy® Award winner.

In 2012, Mendes received his first Oscar® nomination in the music category for “Real In Rio” from the animated, 3-D feature film “Rio.” In addition to being the executive music producer for the blockbuster film, he also contributed five songs to the movie. The soundtrack, Rio: Music from the Motion Picture, featured re-recorded versions of his hits “Mas Que Nada” and “Valsa Carioca.” Mendes, once again, was responsible for bringing the distinctive rhythms of Brazil to a global audience.

Mendes started his career with 1961’s Dance Moderno and the groups Bossa Rio and the Sergio Mendes Trio. From the mid-1960s to the late ’70s, Mendes established his legendary status by taking numerous albums and singles to the top of the charts. But it was Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66 which sparked global stardom. Performing “The Look of Love” at the 1968 Oscars, their version went top 10, quickly followed by the hits “The Fool on the Hill” and “Scarborough Fair.” Enjoying immense popularity, Mendes added soul and funk to his jazz and pop, but always with a Brazilian rhythm. His earlier single, “Mas Que Nada,” marked the first time that a song sung entirely in Portuguese hit Billboard’s Pop chart in the U.S. Mendes’ signature mix of bossa nova/samba and his distinctive pop instrumentation features melodies with distinct sophistication and alluring sexiness that ultimately came to define Brazilian music for many music enthusiasts around the world.

Bossa nova vocalist Bebel Gilberto has partnered with such world-famous artists as Kenny G, David Byrne, Amon Tobin, Smoke City, the Thievery Corporation, Towa Tei, Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, and João Gilberto. Gilberto has also enjoyed worldwide success as a songwriter with the international hits "Batucada" and "Technova.

Gilberto comes from a famous musical family in Brazil. Her father is João Gilberto, her mother is the singer Miúcha, and her uncle (Miúcha's brother) is Chico Buarque de Hollanda. She learned how to sing with Miúcha, and since she was a child, she was already participating in professional musicals like Saltimbancos and Pirlimpimpim. At seven, she experienced her recording debut on her mother's first solo album. Two years later, she performed together with her mother and Stan Getz at Carnegie Hall. In 1983, Gilberto shared an album with the singer Pedrinho Rodrigues (Um Certo Geraldo Pereira, Funarte). Nevertheless, she wisely managed her career, avoiding a hasty debut as a solo singer. She eventually made her solo debut with 1986's Bebel Gilberto, an album whose songs were written through collaborations with Brazilian pop/rock artists like Cazuza, Dé, and others.
Program to be announced from the stage.
