Celebrity Series of Boston will present viral music sensation Trey McLaughlin and The Sounds of Zamar in their Boston debut on Friday, January 31, 2020, at 8pm at Sanders Theatre, 45 Quincy Street, Cambridge, MA. With their expressive vocals and intricate arrangements of contemporary gospel, Trey McLaughlin and the Sounds Of Zamar is positioned to be one of the brightest new groups on the gospel scene.

In addition to the performance, Trey McLaughlin will also lead The Joy of Singing! A FREE Community Sing Workshop” (pre-registration required) on January 30, 2020, and participate in a panel talk at WBUR CitySpace titled “Rocka My Soul: Gospel Music From The Church To The Stage.” Information about both events may be found below.

Trey McLaughlin and The Sounds of Zamar have undoubtedly carved a place for themselves in the music industry through soul-stirring arrangements of contemporary gospel, musical theater, and rich original compositions. The ensemble, organized in 2009, has performed with gospel greats such as William McDowell, Kierra "Kiki" Sheard, Richard Smallwood, Pastor Charles Jenkins, Earnest Pugh, Damien Sneed, and James Fortune. The group gained mass appeal with their rendition of “Chasing After You,” which afforded them a feature on GRAMMY® award-nominated artist Vashawn Mitchell’s “Triumphant” (Deluxe Edition) DVD. Their debut album “Limitless,” is available on I-Tunes

About Trey M. McLaughlin
Trey M. McLaughlin was born in Augusta, GA and attended Columbus State University (The Schwob School of Music) in Columbus, GA.  In addition to being the Founder and Director of The Sounds of Zamar, a musician, and an accomplished composer, Mr. McLaughlin is a much sought after clinician. In 2014, Mr. McLaughlin had the honor of conducting a Master Class and performing at the L’Opéra de Massy in Massy, France. In October of 2015, Trey conducted a 300-voice choir in Krakow, Poland as the guest clinician of the annual 7x Festival. Trey was also afforded the opportunity to conduct a workshop and perform in Menorca, Spain and Rajadell, Spain. Most recently, Mr. McLaughlin served as the principal clinician and Adjunct Faculty at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. He has also served as the guest clinician for several Honor Choruses throughout the state of Georgia.

Trey is a member of the professional music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and he is the former director of G.E.N.E.S.I.S. the Columbus State University Gospel Choir. Trey graduated from CSU in May of 2008, with a Bachelor of Music Performance Degree with an emphasis in Vocal Pedagogy. Currently, he serves as the Director of Barefoot Productions, Inc. /Creative Impressions. Trey also serves as the Director of Worship and Arts at The Historic Tabernacle Baptist Church. 

McLaughlin and this anointed group are known for their rich harmonies and beautiful blends that exude the awesomeness of the Lord, which is showcased throughout their debut album “Limitless,” released in November 2012. The 14 track compilation is sprinkled with ballads and anthems giving glory to God. “Limitless” will undoubtedly touch the soul of any listening ear.

The first single, “I Will Praise,” is a war cry that reminds the listener that even in their darkest moments the goodness of the Lord should be on their lips. The single reached #63 on the Billboard Gospel Chart. The second and current single “More Like Him,” recently broke into the Top 100 of the Billboard Gospel Chart and is quickly being added to rotation at stations throughout the Nation. About “The Joy of Singing! A FREE Community Sing Workshop”
From spiritual context to cultural, songs continue to be a powerful tool to transcend cultural boundaries and cause change. In this interactive singing workshop, the acclaimed Trey McLaughlin and The Sounds of Zamar will teach two songs by rote, focusing on the nuances and intricate harmonies specific to the gospel music style. Pending schedule, members of the Sounds of Zamar may also participate and provide vocal modeling as necessary. The end of the workshop is reserved for Q&A and refreshments. Workshop participants are invited to attend the concert and sing the two songs from their seats in Sanders Theatre.

Join us to mark the 60th anniversary of Alvin Ailey’s dance masterwork “Revelations,” which took spirituals, gospel hymns and blues as its inspiration, for an event exploring the ongoing impact of African American musical legacies on contemporary performing arts including dance, theater, choral work and more, as well as the indelible place of sacred music in Boston’s cultural scene.

Panelists include Solomon Dumas (soloist, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater) and Trey McLaughlin (director, Sounds of Zamar).
