String Quartet No. 19 in C Major, K 465 is the last of Mozart’s set of six string quartets that were dedicated to the composer Joseph Haydn. The so-called “Dissonance Quartet” is noted especially for its divergence—particularly in the slow introduction—from the then-standard rules of harmony. Rob Kapilow and the Ariel Quartet will peer into this iconic work and expose the choices and genius constructed from an array of small decisions made by a master composer.
This performance is in two parts: a lecture with musical examples followed by a complete performance of the work.
