International dance at the Shubert

It's exciting (not to mention a sign of post-pandemic recovery) to have two international dance companies on stage at the Boch Center Shubert Theatre. These companies bring timely, fascinating, and powerful works to Boston.

Brazil's Grupo Corpo takes the stage in October, with two quintessentially Brazilian works to perform. Gil Refazendo is set to iconic songs by Gilberto Gil, and Gira is inspired by the whirling of celebrants in the Afro-Brazilian spiritual practice Umbanda.

Israel's Vertigo Dance Company returns with MAKOM, an evening-length work that speaks to humanity's desire for unity, wholeness, and perpetual search for ourselves.

Intimate globally-inspired works in NEC's Black Box theatre

Music from the Sole makes a local debut with I Didn't Come to Stay, an irresistible dance and live music celebration of tap dance (and its descendants) across the African Diaspora. Music and dance from the United States, Brazil, and beyond come together in an energetic, joyous exploration of tap's lineage and its connections to house, samba, Brazilian funk, and jazz.

Ashwini Ramaswamy's Let the Crows Come brings together three dancers from different traditions (Bharatanatyam, Afro-Caribbean modern, and Gaga) to explore the transmission of memory and idea from person to person, generation to generation, and culture to culture.

Revelations and more

And, as always, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns in May 2024 as the new season draws to a close. Expect classics by Mr. Ailey, works by the company's current Artistic Director Robert Battle and other modern and contemporary dancemakers, and new commissions created on the company by brilliant contemporary choreographers.
