Digital Concert: Dashon Burton, bass-baritone

Virtual Concert

This is a Celebrity Series at Home Digital Performance

Digital performance tickets are sold individually or as an add-on to a subscription that originates with a live, in-person performance. A subscription must include at least one in-person performance, and digital performance tickets are not eligible for exchanges, even for qualified subscribers. This performance streams live on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at 8:00 pm from Longy's Pickman Hall, Cambridge and available on demand until Tuesday, January 25 at 7:00 pm.

In a performance thankfully rescheduled from our 2020/21 season, bass-baritone extraordinaire Dashon Burton makes his Celebrity Series headlining debut with a uniquely American program with pianist Lindsay Garritson. Our audiences might know him as a founding member of contemporary vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth, but his artistry is even more expansive than suggested by that superlative association. Burton is also increasingly known for his enlightening and varied explorations of American music and history, and tonight’s program will add to that reputation.

Across five chapters—“The Shoulders of Giants,” “ Black Like Me: Songs of the Diaspora,” “The Makers,” “Langston and the Masters,” and “The Modern”—Burton will present a sweeping survey of great and significant American music, including works by John Jacob Niles, Kurt Weill, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Paul Bowles, Margaret Bonds, William Grant Still, Marques L. A. Garrett, and Moses Hogan. The songs are well suited for a voice as majestic as Burton’s, and the composers’ stories are as intriguing as their time-tested creations. Taken together, this is an ambitiously curated and insightful suite aptly titled American Stories.

“…the kind of top-shelf performance that has sealed [Burton’s] reputation as one of today’s most compelling performers of sacred music.”

The Boston Globe

“Then came the biggest surprise: the young bass Dashon Burton outshining the trumpet in ‘The trumpet shall sound,’ his enormous, thrilling voice seemingly capable of doing what he was singing about, that is, raising the dead.”

The Wall Street Journal

“This young American singer is the real thing—a bass-baritone with a rich, rounded voice, faultless diction and a natural, expressive style that had one hanging on every word.”
