Luciana Souza’s The Book of Longing and Yellowjackets

Berklee Performance Center

Grammy winner, Brazilian Jazz singer, and composer Luciana Souza returns to the stage with The Book of Longing, her new project, featuring guitarist Chico Pinheiro and bassist Scott Colley. Joining Souza are the storied and influential jazz band, the Yellowjackets, whose broad range of stylistic mastery have earned them 17 Grammy nominations and a unique place in the jazz world.

Luciana Souza performs a set drawn from her new poetry-inspired album, The Book of Longing. In the second half, she joins The Yellowjackets for selections from their September 2018 release, Raising our Voice, on which she was a featured guest vocalist.

“Poetry continues to spill into everything in my life... I constantly find myself transformed after encountering good poetry.”

Luciana Souza

“With her latest release [the Book of Longing], Luciana Souza plumbs the depths of a certain kind of longing. In the alchemical combination of words and music here, she threads a needle through desire, pain, and acceptance. It is the most sublime recording of the season, not kid stuff, and a work of art fine enough to be her very best.”

PopMatters on The Book of Longing

“… a perfectly combustible electric-acoustic outfit whose smart, often challenging and unpredictable compositions draw from fusion, post-bop and contemporary jazz.”
