About

Shelter Music Boston provides transformative chamber music concerts that promote community, creative interaction, respect, and therapeutic benefit to those experiencing homelessness and undergoing substance use recovery.

Shelter Music Boston was founded in 2010 by violinist Julie Leven, who saw a need for classical music provided as a social service in the Boston area. Since Julie’s first concerts at Shattuck Shelter and Kitty Dukakis Treatment Center in Jamaica Plain, MA, the organization has grown over the last 15 years to now serve 13 program sites, with more than 80 musicians on roster.

"Shelter Music Boston deeply values our partnership with Celebrity Series of Boston and we are so grateful for such a positive collaboration. The performance by the Berlin Philharmonic trio in November 2024 was unforgettable—the women at Woods Mullen Shelter and our staff were profoundly moved. One guest captured it best: “The music was awesome & relaxing from the daily struggles. Listening helps what we are going through being homeless.”

About

BalletRox is a 501(c)(3) organization. BalletRox empowers Boston youth through dance, providing a supportive community for life-long success. BalletRox gives more kids a chance to dance.

They strive to improve the well-being of local youth and the greater community through access to dance. Their programs are based on the premise that participation in dance not only provides dance training, but also contributes to social development, encourages healthy lifestyle, and helps develop valuable life skills.

While BalletRox helps students increase technical dance abilities, it is these additional skills which lead to increased confidence levels and self-efficacy that are the most important goals of our programming.

"My most cherished memory of the Celebrity Series is seeing the joy our families experience when gifted complimentary tickets to a "Take your Seat" performance that they would not have otherwise been able to attend.  Attending live performances is a huge part of Performing Arts Education-the Celebrity Series makes it possible for our families to do something together as a family that brings joy, happiness, and education to all.  One of our families wrote after a performance that it was wonderful seeing dancers who were of different backgrounds onstage together, which inspired their son to further his Dance education with BalletRox. We are deeply grateful for our collaboration with the Celebrity Series."

About

The UU Urban Ministry is a non-sectarian, non-profit, social justice organization based in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston.

Today their work focuses in three areas:

  • Safer shelter and workforce development programming for survivors of domestic violence
  • Academic enrichment for Boston-area youth of color
  • Arts and Humanities programming grounded in a social justice message that amplifies artists and historians of color in our neighborhood

They work across race and place to dismantle racism and white supremacy culture and to advance racial, social, and economic justice. They envision a Greater Boston where all people live with freedom and dignity, and have equitable access to resources and opportunity to shape the present and the future.

“In addition to Celebrity Series bringing rich artistry to our campus, I appreciate them for making the arts accessible to our program participants and staff.  When Celebrity Series provided us with tickets to an Alvin Ailey performance, they were utilized with great enthusiasm, and provided UUUM community members with a meaningful opportunity they may not have otherwise had.”
-Rev. Mary Margaret Earl, UUUM Executive Director
